A Better Culture

The Human Rights Commission has published the first part of the National Anti-Racism Framework, "Voices of First Nations Peoples". The HRC development of the framework was announced in late 2021, due to the high prevalence of racism in Australian society and need for a greater commitment to inclusion, equality and social cohesion. The first publication as part of this framework was recently published on November 1st.

The health sector consultation for the framework reveals several common threads around cultural safety that our project aligns with. In particular, participants highlighted a need for Cultural Safety education that is mandatory, meaningful and where results are publicly available. Our Cultural Safety Working Group is in agreement with this and is exploring ways to ensure effectiveness through linking cultural safety training to KPIs. Participants also flagged the need for a robust reporting process for incidents of racism, which is something our Individual Level Interventions & Reporting Pathways Working Group is looking into.
